The country mallow scientifically known as Sida Cordifolia, or more indigenously
known as Bala, is an Ayurvedic herb that grows in tropical and sub-tropical South
Asian plains of India. The entire plant consisting of seeds, roots, stems and leaves
possess therapeutic and curative health long recognized for centuries in the folkloric
herbal medication of the peoples in the region.
The Bala taken on its own or blended with other herbal extracts figured mainly as
an herbal analgesic, a heart stimulant, diuretic and even aphrodisiac as well as
curative medication for wounds.
In recent years, the plant extract has been used as a main active ingredient in formulating
weight loss food supplement. It contains Ephedra which has been shown to possess
powerful fat burning qualities. While the country mallow may have been used for centuries
as a health-giving extract in Ayurvedic medication, there is little to no clinical
or scientific evidence that it has properties for treating many of the promised curative
benefits including weight loss.
How Does Country Mallow Work For Weight Loss?
Little is known on the curative and therapeutic actions of the chemicals in the country
mallow plant in treating various ailments other than its Ephedra content.
This compound has been shown to have fat-burning properties that also act as a stimulant
and more precisely a Sympathomimetic substance that can suppress and reduce hunger.
Indian scientists in 1930 isolated the sympathomimetic alkaloid with all the attributes
and actions of the Ephedrine. This accounted for its widespread herbal extraction
in Ayurvedic medicine as a cardiac stimulant more than anything.
Unfortunately, the few clinical tests on Ephedra and Ephedra-like extracts such as
the country mallow points to minimal weight loss of around 2 lbs per month on a regular
diet intake of the supplement.
Is Country Mallow Safe?
Both the Ephedra and Country mallow plants are banned in the US for health safety
concerns. The country mallow contains ephedrine, an amphetamine-like stimulant that
is banned by the FDA as it has been linked to:
• High blood pressure
• Heart attacks
• Muscle seizures and disorders
• Palpitation and arrhythmia
• Even loss of consciousness and death
But these substances can still be ordered online.
All this time, no scientific study has yet confirmed the safe dosage of country mallow
of human consumption and the anticipated side effects can be real at any dosage.
Its use is contraindicated for pregnant and breastfeeding woman, children below 12
years and people with seizure disorders, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, arrhythmias,
high blood, tachycardia, prostatic hypertrophy, psychosis and angina pectoris.
Bear in mind that being all-natural in food supplements do not guarantee safety and
you are advised to consult with your doctor before taking country mallow-based drugs
or diet supplements.
